Post-Epidemic Era: New Displays are Greeted with New Changes

The Covid-19 epidemic in 2020 brings a broad and profound impact on the global economy, including the display industry, and affects the entire display industry chain. This will further increase the uncertainty of the development of the global display industry. Therefore, the market price, supply and demand, and corporate profitability of the global display industry will all be challenged.

At the Global Display Industry Spring Trend Release (2020) held by CODA on May 18th, many participants said that due to the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic, in the short term, global TV and smartphone sales would be affected, and the demand for related panels would decrease, but the industry would continue to develop steadily in the future. With China’s accelerated development of new infrastructure such as 5G and industrial Internet, large-size panels and commercial displays would have broad application prospects, and the display industry would be greeted with a new transformation.

Experts attending the conference pointed out that China’s display industry has the core advantages of turning crises into opportunities: First, China’s huge production capacity attracts investment from global peers and has formed a complete supply chain system. The huge terminal processing capacity can digest the display panel production capacity; second, China will keep pace with South Korean and Japanese manufacturers on the new track in the future, and there is an opportunity to realize “corner overtaking” due to the advanced layout and leading advantages in some areas; third, Chinese display panel companies have taken various measures to ensure continuous production, and it is one of the few industries that have not completely stopped production during the epidemic period. Most companies have resumed work and production, and still maintain strong market competitiveness.

Liang Xinqing, the executive vice chairman and secretary-general of China Optics and Optoelectronics Manufactures Association Liquid Crystal Branch (CODA), said, “In the post-epidemic era, display will have a closer connection with people's lives. The Covid-19 epidemic has promoted the realization of some new application products and application scenarios, such as live systems, online meetings, video education, face recognition, and medical displays, etc., bringing opportunities to the industry.

The display industry accelerates reshuffle and the global industry is restructured

At the same time, the global display industry has accelerated its reshuffle due to the influence of the Covid-19 epidemic. In the process of global industry restructuring, companies of Chinese mainland have achieved leading advantages in the TFT-LCD industry. In terms of new display technologies, such as AMOLED, QLED, and Mini/Micro LED, etc. Chinese companies are also actively deploying and trying to catch up.

Chinese mainland currently dominates the TFT-LCD market, while South Korea is accelerating its transformation to AMOLED. Both Samsung Display and LG Display, two giants in the South Korean panel industry, have promoted AMOLED as their strategic priority. Samsung Display is accelerating the breakthrough of QD-OLED and QNED technology on the basis of occupying a dominant position in the small and medium-sized AMOLED market. It plans to mass produce QD-OLED in 2021 to make up for the lack of large-size business caused by the closure of the TFT-LCD production line. LG Display takes the lead in the large-size OLED market, and is working with downstream manufacturers of TV brands to promote the popularization of OLED TVs. At the same time, it is improving its technical strength in small and medium-sized AMOLEDs to gain more brand customers.

Faced with South Korea’s transformation to AMOLED, Chinese panel manufacturers are also catching up quickly. In the past four to five years, the small and medium-sized AMOLED industry in Chinese mainland has developed rapidly. At the same time, panel manufacturers in Chinese mainland are also planning production lines of large-size AMOLED. Next, China and South Korea may have more cooperation in the industry, and the development of China's AMOLED industry is worth looking forward to.
